New Hebrides trench : subduction rate from associated lithospheric bulge 1
نویسنده
چکیده
We present new data on the lithospheric bulge in the vicinity of the Loyalty and New Hebrides Islands, and attempt to interpret the difference of the topographic profile of the outer wall of the New Hebrides trench from a theoretical profile. The free edge of the lithospheric plate appears to correspond to a line of maximum seismic strain release. The uplift rate and consequently the subduction rate have been calculated from studies of the dynamic aspect of the bulge and from z30Th/z34U ages of raised coral terraces.

Evolving force balance during incipient subduction
[1] Nearly half of all active subduction zones initiated during the Cenozoic. All subduction zones associated with active back arc extension have initiated since the Eocene, hinting that back arc extension may be intimately associated with an interval (several tens of Myr) following subduction initiation. That such a large proportion of subduction zones are young indicates that subduction initi...
متن کاملThe effect of a power-law mantle viscosity on trench retreat rate
S U M M A R Y The subduction of lithospheric plates is partitioned between subducting platemotion and lateral slab migration (i.e. trench retreat and advance). We use 3-D, dynamic models of subduction to address the role of a power-law mantle viscosity on subduction dynamics and, in particular, rates of trench retreat. For all numerical models tested, we find that a power-law rheology results i...
متن کاملDynamics of subduction initiation with different evolutionary pathways
[1] Changes of plate motion may have induced subduction initiation (SI), but the tectonic history of SI is different from one subduction zone to another. Izu-Bonin-Mariana (IBM) SI, accompanied by strong backarc spreading and voluminous eruption of Boninites, contrasts with the Aleutians which shows neither. Using finite element models, we explore visco-elasto-plastic parameters and driving bou...
متن کاملThe dynamics of double slab subduction
S U M M A R Y We use numerical models to investigate the dynamics of two interacting slabs with parallel trenches. Cases considered are: a single slab reference, outward dipping slabs (out-dip), inward dipping slabs (in-dip) and slabs dipping in the same direction (same-dip). Where trenches converge over time (same-dip and out-dip systems), large positive dynamic pressures in the asthenosphere ...
متن کاملDo Trench Sediments Affect Great Earthquake Occurrence in Subduction Zones?
-Seismic energy release is dominated by the underthrusting earthquakes in subduction zones, and this energy release is further concentrated in a few subduction zones. While some subduction zones are characterized by the occurrence of great earthquakes, others are relatively aseismic. This variation in maximum earthquake size between subduction zones is one of the most important features of glob...
